Ten years of translating scientific journals (see partial list below), with peak output of one million words per year, served as a good introduction to translation and provided a strong technical background, particularly in ecology, forestry, geology, civil engineering and construction. Since 1996, most of my work has been in the oil industry (Sakhalin-1) and economics (sole translator of the monthly journals Matekon (Mathematical Economics) 1998-2000 and Problems of Economic Transition since November 2002). Recently I have begun to spend more time on financial translation (Russian stock market, bond issues, etc.). I have translated one and a half books: Metallurgy of Chromium (the first translator died halfway through; I don't blame him) and The Fiscal Structure of the Russian Federation, and one play: Let's Have Sex! by V. Krasnogorov (in collaboration with the author).

"Dear Jim, I just wanted to let you know that the editor was very pleased with your translation of the Humor issue. She usually makes very extensive changes to the translation [by other translators], but there were very few on this issue. Irina"

"Hi James, I just got a call from the client. She was very pleased with your translation. She said good words not only about your writing, but also about the 'whole things' you know. Thanks for everything. Sonia"

"Dear Jim, I just sent you 16 pages. ... We can't seem to find a qualified translator with anywhere close to your skills and experience. Thank you in advance. Olga"

"Our man in Bratislava is extremely pleased with your work, and you are definitely making my life easier. Thanks, Jim! Therese"

"I just wanted to share this comment from editor with you. 'This was an excellent translation and I did not make any changes.' Yasushi"
